Comfort. Energy Expenses. Safety. Value

To prevent serious issues down the road, it’s important to be aware of possible problems with your AC unit to make sure it gets resolved quickly and correctly. Long-term problems can lead to higher electric bills, uncomfortable conditions inside your home, and costly repairs.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of common repairs to be aware of to help you be prepared. Especially as many of these issues are connected and a problem with one part of your unit may cause problems in other areas.

Here are some common air conditioning repairs that you may face:

  1. Refrigerant Leaks
  2. Compressor Failure
  3. Clogged Condensate Drain Line
  4. Fan Problems

Refrigerant Leaks

Before we go over leaks, let’s define what refrigerant is and how it works. Refrigerant is a compound found in a fluid or gaseous state that absorbs heat. It’s found in your unit’s copper cables and traps heat from the indoor air. If it begins to leak, your system won’t be able to cool down efficiently, causing your system to work harder and leading to higher electricity bills.

Some common causes of refrigerant leaks include wear and tear on your AC unit, small holes in your AC coils (often called pinhole leaks), and physical damage caused by things like lawnmowers or animals. If your refrigerant leak is caused by problems with your coils, an HVAC professional will be able to replace your coils and the amount of refrigerant in your system as well. They’ll also be able to patch up any holes and check for any overall damage to your system.

Compressor Failure

The compressor in your HVAC system is often considered the heart of your unit as it’s responsible for compressing the refrigerant and allowing it to move throughout your system. If it fails, it can lead to refrigerant leaks, weak airflow, and even trip your circuit breaker as it may overheat. With a proper car, an HVAC professional can resolve and even prevent this issue. They’ll be able to inspect the wiring, clean suction lines, and remove any clutter around your outdoor unit such as leaves, dust, and grime.

Clogged Condensate Drain Line

Your condensate drain line plays a critical role in the indoor cooling process as it is an exit route for the moisture collected by the evaporator coil as air passes over it. It’s responsible for removing humidity from the air and turning it into weather which is then drained and deposited outside next to your AC unit.

If the drain line gets clogged, such as from accumulated dirt, it can get backed up potentially causing water damage and other long-term issues with your unit. Clogged drains can lead to serious health concerns if not dealt with quickly, and efficiently. An HVAC professional will be able to clean out your drain line and prevent any long term problems through regular maintenance.

Fan Problems

The fan in your unit is responsible for blowing air over the evaporator coil to cool the air inside and blowing air over the outdoor condenser to let out the heat inside your building. A variety of things can keep your fans from working properly such as a fault motor, worn belts, or a build of dirt and debris. An HVAC professional will be able to troubleshoot the problem and get it repaired without any lasting damage.
